Brain structural complexity and consciousness

چکیده

Structure shapes function. Understanding what is structurally special about the brain that allows it to generate consciousness remains a fundamental scientific challenge. Recently, advances in imaging techniques have made possible measure structure of human brain, from morphology neurons and neuronal connections gross anatomy regions, in-vivo non-invasively. Using advanced techniques, was discovered structural diversity between topology connections, as opposed sheer number or are key consciousness. When high follow modular topology, will become functionally differentiable integrable with one another. The levels differentiation integration, turn, enable produce richest conscious experiences smallest connections. Consequently, across individuals, those smaller volume but higher tend richer than larger lower diversity. Moreover, within reduction if accompanied by an increase diversity, result experiences, vice versa. These findings suggest having not necessarily beneficial for consciousness; contrast, optimal architecture where generated at minimal cost biological material, physical space, metabolic energy.

Consciousness and Complexity

Conventional approaches to understanding consciousness are generally concerned with the contribution of specific brain areas or groups of neurons. By contrast, it is considered here what kinds of neural processes can account for key properties of conscious experience. Applying measures of neural integration and complexity, together with an analysis of extensive neurological data, leads to a tes...

Measuring structural complexity in brain images

An information theory based formalism for medical image analysis proposed in Young et al. [Young, K., Chen, Y., Kornak, J., Matson G. B., Schuff, N., 2005. Summarizing Complexity in High Dimensions, Phys. Rev. Lett. 94 098701-1] is described and used to estimate image complexity measures as a means of generating interpretable summary information. An analysis of anatomical brain MRI data exhibit...

Consciousness and Complexity: the Cognitive Quest Consciousness and Complexity: the Cognitive Quest

Some implications of the view that mind is a suitably complex kind of process are investigated in various contexts. The underlying theme is that the behavior of complex systems cannot be adequately judged by that of simple systems. I rst present a personal exploration of the mechanistic account of mind in terms of non-technical considerations; then I present and criticize some ideas of Kripke, ...

Mind, brain and consciousness.

There is a familiar dichotomy between mind and brain, whereas the concepts of mind and brain, whereas the concepts of 'mind' and 'consciousness' often are 'mind' and 'consciousness' often are conflated: I wish to argue here that both conflated: I wish to argue here that both suppositions are wrong. suppositions are wrong. First, let us consider the terms 'mind' First, let us consider the terms ...

Brain structural complexity and life course cognitive change

Fractal measures such as fractal dimension (FD) can quantify the structural complexity of the brain. These have been used in clinical neuroscience to investigate brain development, ageing and in studies of psychiatric and neurological disorders. Here, we examined associations between the FD of white matter and cognitive changes across the life course in the absence of detectable brain disease. ...
